Edward Flynn graduated from the University of Buffalo with a degree in Illustration and Communication Design a few years before the rise of desktop computers. After graduation, he promptly moved down to New York City to follow his dreams as an Editorial Illustrator/Cartoonist. However like many other young illustrators, he found that falling back on his Graphic Design skills provided a more stable living, especially when he honed in on working in the advertising industry.
It was there in which he spent the next few decades working as an art director and then digital retoucher for some of the biggest ad agencies in NYC.
However all the while, he still managed to use his illustration and cartooning skills whenever he could, either in ad client assignments, or in the rare freelance illustration/cartooning gig.
One of these gigs provided a wonderful opportunity when one day in 1998 he answered an ad on Craigslist that was seeking a comic book artist. It turned out to have been placed by film director Darren Aronofsky, who was making his first film “Pi” and wanted a companion book to go with the film. The creation of the book was a great experience that he fondly cherishes. It helped to keep the fuel in the fire for his love of illustration.
But of course, then there’s life which always throws a curveball. The period from 2001 to 2008 was pure turmoil on so many levels. Life in the ad biz and living in NYC was getting to be too much. When the housing crash struck, and most of his work was all online with his clients, Ed decided that a move west to Portland, Oregon would provide the serenity he required.
Since 2008, Ed has been living and enjoying the Pacific Northwest, where he works with clients around the country.
However when the world came to a standstill during the pandemic, he decided to start easing back into the vocation that has always been his main passion: that being Illustration.
It’s been a long, strange, circular trip back to the where Ed started out, or more to the point, is re-starting from, but he doesn’t let this reincarnation phase him. Ed is a strong believer of the Zen proverb, “If you’re enjoying the journey, you’re already there.”
