Primary Hughes is best known for his vibrant acrylic portraits, which have been featured in numerous gallery exhibitions and publications from California to New York. Based in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, where he is a Professor of Illustration at Northern Michigan University, Hughes can often be found exploring the natural landscape along the coast of Lake Superior with his plein-air kit. His painting and illustration work revels in the interplay of light and color, capturing the emotional depth within moments of determination, thoughtful reflection, and readiness for what lies ahead.
