On March 9th, 2023, Jerry W. McDaniel passed away at his home in Los Angeles after many months of suffering.

Jerry is leaving behind his son Teja Dion McDaniel, two grandsons, Tristan and Liam, and his art-partner for 15+ years, Ileana Costea.

Jerry was born and grew up in Ohio (Union Furnace, Athens, and Logan). He worked in NYC for 45 years after which he moved to Los Angeles, CA. He had studios in NYC; Stanford, CT; Los Angeles, CA; Paris, France; and Palm Springs, CA. He studied at Columbus College of Art and Design (CCAD), from which, in 1982, he received the Award for Excellence, known then as the Award of Outstanding Alumnus, and also studied at the New School for Social Research (NSSR), in NYC.

Jerry was a well-known illustrator and painter. He was a professor and department chair at the Fashion Institute of Technology/SUNY. He was a freelance illustrator in New York doing art and advertising work for Philip Morris/Marlboro for 25 years, doing full pages adds for The New York Times. He also did work for the Intercontinental and Hilton Hotels, and other companies. His illustrations appeared in numerous well-known magazines. For many years Jerry was an active member of The Society of Illustrators (SI – NYC) and more recently, a member of the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles (SILA).

Some of his best-known art pieces are the two Harlow’s posters (1966 & 67) and his AFL-CIO poster, Solidarity Works (1991) for the National American Union. All three of these pieces are in the permanent collection of The Victoria & Albert Museum, London, UK, and one painting, concerning September 11, One Nation Indivisible, is in the 9/11 Memorial in NYC. Several other of his posters are in the Center for the Study of Political Graphics (CSPG), El Segundo, CA, and the newly opened “Posters Only” Poster Museum, NYC. Jerry has art in numerous private and public collections all over the world.

Jerry liked to call himself a “heterogeneous artist,” as he used many different styles, and he was also a passionate tennis player, and created numerous posters for tennis, and all other sports.
