Description:
Figure Drawing and Lighting is a 2 day workshop designed to provide students with a strong foundation in the hard skills of drawing: placement, gesture, construction, lighting and rendering. By understanding and mastering these critical concepts, students learn the basic tools of visual representation, enabling them to approach advanced, specialized classes with confidence.

We’ll begin with an overview of contemporary and historical figure drawings and their function within the picturemaking process. With this context established, students will learn to think of their figure drawings, not as ends in themselves, but as a gateway to learning skills that are applicable to any kind of drawing, painting or illustration.

We’ll work with long poses, allowing students enough time to take a project from initial sketch to finished rendering. Along the way, we’ll address all relevant concepts for the creation of successful figure drawings: from rhythmical gesture, to organic modeling and accenting.

This workshop is a great introduction to drawing as a discipline and a valuable foundation before embarking on advanced painting, illustration and concept work. Students of all levels welcome.

Bio:
Ramón Hurtado is a contemporary genre and landscape painter based in Los Angeles. He’s taught figure drawing and painting classes for the last 5 years, along with numerous successful workshops in both Los Angeles and abroad.

He currently teaches in the full-time programs at the Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art and the Safehouse Atelier.
