We are sad to announce the passing of Howard Goldstein, who passed away at the age of 93 in Thousand Oaks, California on August 3, 2024.

Howard, a prominent Illustrator and graphic designer, was a pivotal figure in the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles, serving as its President from 1979-1980, as Editor for many years and as Community Liaison for several years. His creative genius spanned over fifty years, during which time he produced commercial and fine art that garnered hundreds of awards for design and Illustration. He also was a hobbyist in metal sculpture when he wasn’t busy in those fields. His paintings and sculptures are cherished in numerous private and institutional collections.

Howard, a third-generation member of a New York publishing family, embarked on his career in 1957 after earning a Postgraduate Degree from City College in New York City. His journey led him to the Los Angeles area in 1958, where he worked for a diverse range of employers as an artist, production manager, and art director. His creative talents were showcased in the design and illustration of hundreds of books, covers, directories, tabloids, and magazines.

Howard’s career encompassed several positions as a corporate, creative director, and consultant to domestic and international organizations.

In 1982, he started his firm, Howard Goldstein Design / Graphic Sorcerer, where he continued to gather industry accolades and notoriety for his work. This led to him not only actively lecturing and writing as a contributing editor to various graphic arts trade publications but also designing for and teaching at the Art Center College of Design and the Otis College of Art and Design.

Howard was also an active member of the University of California at Los Angeles Alcohol Research Center Committee from 1980—to 1982. Member of National Computer Graphics Association, Publications Marketing Association, Women in Design, American Institute Graphic Arts, Art Directors Los Angeles (board directors), Graphic Artists Guild Los Angeles (co-founder, chairman board 1980-1981), Artist Equity, Publications Marketing Association, Visual Artists Association (advisory board since 1988, advisor)

In his later years, Howard shared his family’s stories and history with the world through his two books, “Benches: Yetta” and “Benches: Jakob & Charlie”. These books, which are available from various online booksellers, stand as a testament to Howard’s commitment to preserving his family’s legacy.

Howard Goldstein is survived by his two children, Lisa Fawn and Amanda Rose, his granddaughters Carlie Amber and Piper Auslynn, and his great-grandson Elon Jordan.
