In this one-day intensive session, information is given on submitting, how to prepare samples, and how to put together a pitch for a series or graphic novel. Writers will earn about how to find artists, how to work with them, and more.
There will be an overview of various publishers, both those who cater to the comic book store market, and those who sell mostly in book stores. You’ll find out what editors are looking for, what they expect, and what they DON’T want to see. You’ll learn what skills you need for whichever part of the comics market you want to wind up in. We’ll also go over a list of important resources and facts about self-publishing and crowd funding.
The class is taught by Jim Higgins. He’s a former DC Comics editor, small alternative comics publisher, and has taught comics classes and workshops for 20 years at The School of Visual Arts in NYC, CalArts, UCLA Extension, Meltdown Comics, and The Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles. He’s appeared as an expert on comics on ABC News Nightline, BBC Radio, Storage Wars (!) and has his own show called “Crafting Comics with Jim Higgins”, on Nerdist’s online Alpha channel.
