Paula Castleberry

I’m an artist and freelance illustrator/designer, and my favorite thing to do is drink coffee while I draw, paint or read. Currently, some of my illustrations can be seen hanging in the gallery at Cheatdayland, a pop-up museum in the L.A. Arts District dedicated to the celebration of our yummiest “cheat day” foods! I have one husband, two daughters, and two cats, and I also teach computer graphics at FIDM, which keeps me pretty busy.

Bernard Lee

by Bernard Lee on 12/04/2018 in SILA Member Artists

I have created illustrations for a wide range of editorial and publishing clients including Variety, Scientific American, VICE, Macmillan, as wells for the film and video game industries. One of the primary subject matters that I enjoy painting to revolves around history. Whether a historical event, person, or philosophy, things of the past have always intrigued me to read extensively about and to research visual reference material for my artwork.

As most of my illustrations are done entirely traditionally, my process requires an extensive amount of pre-planning. This includes steps such as doing multiple sketch iterations, refined color studies, photoshoots, costume rentals, and more. When I begin working on finals, I first lay down a detailed pencil drawing with washes of transparent acrylics layered on top to key in basic colors. Once that is done, I go in on top and render out the final in oils using my color studies as a fairly rigid guide.
