GETTING INTO COMICS 1 DAY WORKSHOP
Getting into comics isn’t easy. There are many ways to start and many different goals depending on what you want. Do you want to work for Marvel or DC or another big company? Do you want to produce a comics memoir? Maybe you want to create an alternative-type comic in the style of Dan Clowes or Michael DeForge. Do you want to pitch your idea to an alternative comics publisher? Would you be okay with publishing it yourself? And what about Kickstarter? Is it worth trying? If so, for what kind of project? (see below for payment link)

In this one-day workshop, you’ll get the answers to all these questions, and more! There will be information given on submitting, how to prepare samples, and how to put together a pitch for a series or graphic novel. There will be an overview of various publishers, both those who cater to the comic book store market, and those who sell mostly in book stores. You’ll find out what editors are looking for, what they expect, and what they DON’T want to see. You’ll learn what skills you need for whichever part of the comics market you want to wind up in.

PLUS — the day will end with each participant getting an individual portfolio review.

The event will run for four-five hours. Cost: $65. Refreshments will be served while people wait their turn to get their portfolios reviewed.

The workshop will be led by Jim Higgins. Jim is a former DC Comics editor, and is a freelance writer and editor. He’s written screenplays for feature films and articles on film and comics. He’s been teaching comics for 18 years at places like The School of Visual Arts in NYC, CalArts, Otis College of Art and Design, The Society of Illustrators, and UCLA Extension.
