Judy Unger: “I have been an illustrator for over 40 years. I graduated from California State University, Northridge in 1981. I began my art career immediately after, and have been illustrating ever since. My instructional blog “Illustrating My Life” is filled with anecdotes and inspiration from my art career.
I have taught illustration at California State University, Los Angeles, UCLA Extension, California State University, Northridge, and Otis-Parsons Art Institute.
When I was only 14 years old, I published a book of mazes. I recently gifted one of my mazes to Barbra Streisand, and it is hanging in her home office.
I developed my distinctive photorealistic technique through use of watercolor dyes and colored pencil. Food and botanicals have frequently been my favorite subjects and water droplets are often featured in my paintings. I like to refer to my work as being “idealistic.” I never want my food illustrations to be so perfect that they are no longer appetizing.
Virtually every major food company in the United States has commissioned me and my artwork has been used on ads, labels, magazines, billboards, greeting cards, as well as fine-art prints and posters.
When my commercial art career slowed down during the pandemic, I began painting fine art images for pleasure. I sell my extensive library of images on Getty and iStock (a Getty partner).
I am also an avid songwriter and I compose meditation music for the free app “Insight Timer.” https://insighttimer.com/judyunger
Many of my songs are dedicated to my son Jason, who died in 1992. My true passion is creating and sharing healing music, which brought joy back to me.”
