Making Comics: A Class For Both Writers and Artists
Making Comics is a 12-session class that focuses on the fundamental skills of creating comics. The class is for both writers and artists. In it, you’ll learn the most important aspect of writing — how to structure a story as it relates to the medium of comics and graphic novels. Cartoonists will often take art classes to improve their drawing, but not enough take the time to hone their skills as writers. In this workshop, writers and cartoonists learn the essential knowledge needed to write a story with interesting characters, an engaging plot, and a satisfying ending. The artists will be given drawing tips, instruction about technique, and examples of work by great masters, new and old, to help with visual storytelling, composition, light and dark, figure work, and other drawing skills. Writers will be given example of the best formats for comics scripts, examples of pro scripts, and info on how to find and work with artists.
The goal for the artists is to have a finished 8 to 10-page mini-comic that is a complete, self-contained story at the end of the classes. The goal for writers is to have a completed script for a self-contained, 14 to 15-page short comics story.
PS You may be forced to read some great comics for homework.
The class is taught by Jim Higgins. Jim’s been a writer and editor in the comics business for over 20 years. He’s worked as a screenwriter and a comics consultant for films and TV. He was an editor at DC Comics in the Paradox Press division and is the editor and publisher of New Thing, an international anthology of short comics stories. Jim’s been teaching writing and drawing comics at major art colleges and institutions such as Otis College of Art and Design, The School of Visual Arts, Calarts and others for many years. In 2017, his show for Nerdist, “Crafting Comics With Jim Higgins,” ran on the Alpha channel, an online network run by Legendary Entertainment.
Class is held at The Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles located at 5119 Eagle Rock Blvd., Los Angeles, CA
