The Hartford Art School at the University of Hartford Invites applications for a full-time
tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor faculty position in the Illustration Department
to begin teaching in the fall of 2018. The department offers a BFA in Illustration and
Minors in Illustration and Animation within the Hartford Art School’s comprehensive
undergraduate program accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and
Design. The Illustration Department emphasizes drawing, proficiency with traditional
and digital media, and visual problem-solving skills in a rigorous program focused on
developing professional competencies for the illustration market. Opportunities also exist
to teach in the university’s innovative interdisciplinary studies program.

As a recognized and active practitioner in the field, the successful applicant will be a
passionate educator with knowledge of both historic traditions and current trends in
illustration. The candidate will bring rigor and innovation to the program and possess a
strong commitment to community and collegiality with a willingness to employ
technology. An MFA or equivalent experience as a professional illustrator and a
minimum of two years teaching experience are required. The position requires teaching
three courses each semester, typically teaching at the sophomore through senior levels of
the undergraduate illustration program, but subject to the needs of the department and
school. Expectations include advising, art school and university committee service,
recruitment, program development, and production of a record of creative or research
activities that meet tenure requirements. Salary is competitive and commensurate with

studio-based disciplines in a liberal arts university setting. With an undergraduate
enrollment of about 310 students, our students receive personal attention from the
professional artists, designers, and historians who teach our classes in eight diverse studio
areas and art history.
