SILA’s Position on AI Generated Art
The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a means of producing fully rendered artwork through the use of unauthorized data collection without respect to artists’ rights is a very real danger to the livelihoods of artists everywhere. The artists’ copyright is their best protection against abuse. Our belief is that both artists and the creative industry need to strengthen their protections against such abuse. We do not at this time intend to promote AI generated artwork. Additionally our annual competition Illustration West will not accept nor make space for AI as a category until protections for artists’ rights are built into its adoption and usage. The Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles seeks to uphold high standards of professionalism and ethical practice in support for our members.
